FAQ's
What is therapeutic massage?
Massage is the manual maipulation of soft tissue in the body to promote the circulation of blood and lymph, relax muscles, relief from pain, and restore the body's metabolic balance. Massage is an alternative way to health care and can aid in the body's recovery.
Why should I get regular massages?
There are many benefits to regular massage. Massage can help the body and mind by releasing the stresses that have build up in your body. Some benefits include: improving circulation; loosening contracted muscles while stimulating weak ones; improving fatigue; decreasing high blood pressure; reducing stress; preventing or relieving pain from injuries or muscle spasms, strains, or sprains; improving flexibility; and improving chronic conditions. Massage can improve your sense of well-being and enhance your ability to think calmly and creatively.
What are the "knots" I feel?
The "knots" you feel are muscles that have been overworked and overstressed and have adjoined to the connective tissue around it. "Knots" are usually formed from the muscles being on all the time. This means that it is continually contracted or worked and can't release to its normal state. Another reason may be an injury such as surgery, scar tissue, or whiplash. Also, it could be from excess deposits of minerals, proteins, etc. in your body. Whichever reason applies to you, massage can help release the "knots" found in your body.
How will I feel after a massage?
Generally speaking, massage should make you feel better when you walk out of the room. How long the relief lasts depends on how well your body responds to the massage. If deeper pressure is used in an area, you may feel soreness in that area. Not to worry, when the soreness passes you will feel extremely better.
What should I do during the massage?
The most important thing to remember during a massage is that it's all about you! Make sure you are comfortable throughout the massage. If you need to move around or itch your nose its alright to do so. If the therapist needs to adjust your position they will move you or ask you to help. More often than not, the only thing the therapist will ask of you is to breathe deeply. You choose to close your eyes and relax during a massage or choose to talk. It's up to you because that time is your time.
What should I wear during the massage?
Wear whatever you feel comfortable with. Some people choose to leave their undergarments on while some prefer to have everything off. As you change, the Massage Therapist will leave the room, and knock before she reenters. Also, while you are on the table, you will be completely covered. The only area exposed will be the area being worked on (i.e. leg, arm, or back).
What should I do after my massage?
You should limit physical activity, with the exception of Sports Massage. It is also very important to drink lots of water throughout the day to help the body flush all the toxins out of your system.
What are the different styles of massage?
There are many types of massages currently available in the world today. The most popular include Swedish and Deep Tissue. We offer many other styles as well including sports, trigger point, pregnancy, and geriatric massage. Please see the About Massage page for further information on the massage types.
How often should I get massages?
How often you need/want a massage depends on you and your body. If you are just looking to relax, once a month could work, but if you are trying to relieve chronic issues, it may take several massages close together to work through the muscle and get to where the problem really lies. For most, massages once a week to every other week works well. Whatever your priorities are, remember that your health should be on the top of the list.
